that is dominating washington. the latest on the fbi investigation that led to the sudden resignation of cia director david petraeus on friday. lawmakers are now calling for an inquiry as new details emerge about the entire time line. officials say the investigation began after jill kelley, a 37-year-old volunteer at mcdill air force base in tampa, complained of receiving harassing e-mails. kelley and her husband met petraeus and his wife when he headed the tampa bay central command from 2008 to 2010. now the fbi traced those e-mails to paula broadwell, co-author of the tpetraeus biography that le them to other 0 e-mail that is did indicate a romantic relationship between broadwell and petraeus. this morning "the new york times" report says they were notified of petraeus' affair in the late summer. in the senior law enforcement official said they interviewed petraeus in late october and concluded there was no criminal violation. and on november 6, election day, the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, jim clapper. clapper then told the white house on wednesday. the national security te

of the country's top national security officials. lawmakers in both parties say the fbi failed in its duty to report on the secretive investigation earlier in the process. now, before we get into the debate, here are some of the key allegations and facts about this unusual investigation. first, several months ago, government officials tell nbc news that fbi investigators responded to a complaint about anonymous e-mails sent to jill kelly, a 37-year-old volunteer liaison to mcdill air force base in tampa. kelly and her husband were friends with petraeus and his wife. the fbi began by investigating whether those e-mails constituted harassment. officials told nbc news. then the bureau subsequently found that petraeus' biographer, paula broadwell, was sending those anonymous e-mails that law enforcement officials had dealt with. the investigation also determined she was having an affair with petraeus. the fbi then used that information from the investigation to uncover more details and obtain a warrant to surveil broadwell's e-mail, according to the "wall street journal." so, in september, off

buy grafr, paula broadweliograp. kelley is shown with petraeus and their spouses. from there the fbi's investigation uncovered sexually explicit e-mails between broadwell and petraeus. they set up e-mails with fake names. when the fbi questioned petraeus and broadwell, both came clean about the relationship in october. we're told that the president didn't learn about the investigation until last thursday. attorney general eric holder and two house republicans including eric cantor knew weeks before, perhaps more curious, how could the cia, the agency that knows all, not have known about this? let's go to the table. i actually think that the biggest questions are for the fbi. they did not inform the senate intelligence committee, who is supposed to be informed of any fbi investigations that potentially involve national security. they were not informed until friday basically right before all of us found out. so i kind of think the biggest questions here are for the fbi and their handling of the investigation, but really the question on everybody's mind is g mail, really? g mail, head o

that an ethically sketchy, politically motivated fbi agent could spark an incendiary federal investigation tunnelling into private lives to help a woman he liked and later blow it up to hurt a president he didn't like. it's also worrisome that the nation's spymaster who had presided in the military where adultery could result in court-martial could not have found a more clandestine manner of talking naughty to his biograph biographer, baby, than a gmail drop box used by terrorists, teenagers and authors. the scandal is a good reminder that although mccain and palin earned total trust, these guys are human beings working under extremely stressful circumstances, and their judgments are not beyond reproach. one of the elements of the story that hasn't been referred to greatly in all of the coverage because of the obvious, that's atop the coverage, is the repeated assignments to iraq and afghanistan. not only among the brass but obviously the deployments, among the troops, seven, eight, nine deployments. it takes -- exacts a crushing burden on families. >> i mean, in the heart of this whole st
